types of furnacesWhen you realize you need a new heater installation, you may begin to wonder about the different types of furnaces and the best one for you. As a local heating company, we sell and install many brands and types of furnaces and can help you choose the right one for your home.

The primary types of furnaces are:

  • Gas furnace
  • Heat pump
  • Boiler
  • Geothermal
  • Ductless Mini-split system

Which is Best?

That depends greatly on your home and budget. If you currently have a gas furnace, we recommend that your new heater installation also be a gas furnace. Todays gas furnaces are up to 98% energy efficient. If you have gas at your home, its worth knowing that although your up-front investment will be more, your energy costs will be less.

Heat pumps are the second most common option and todays models are energy efficient. Theyre cheaper to install, but that lower initial investment will be balanced out over its life by the cost of use in your electric bills.

If your home lacks ducts but you want to move away from a boiler, consider a ductless mini-split system. They can both heat and cool your home without ducts. They use electricity and are a type of heat pump but dont require ducts.

Geothermal is the cleanest and most energy efficient type of heat for your home as it uses the heat in the earth to heat your home. However, new system installation can be quite expensive and are best to consider when building a new home rather than converting an existing home.

Although we can install a new boiler, rarely do we. Its the least energy efficient of all types of furnaces. The need for oil delivery can also be inconvenient which is another reason its not a popular option.
